There’s a global cyberattack happening that’s taking down hospitals and telecoms companies
The same massive cyberattack which has put the UK’s NHS in total chaos is affecting companies in Spain and Portugal, according to local media.
Mobile operator Telefónica, Santander, and Portuguese utility companies Portugal Telecom and EDP, have all reportedly been hit by the same ransomware, according to local media.
Telefónica has reportedly told its employees to stop working and shut down their computers, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo. Around 85% of the firm’s computers have been affected by the attack, sources told the newspaper.
And according to Computerworld Portugal, Portugal Telecom similarly told employees to shut down their PCs for the day.
Telefónica confirmed it had been hit by a version of the WannaCry ransomware — malicious software which encrypts the information on a device, then demands a ransom to return it.
