Graft trial may affect Guan Eng's ability to defend seats in GE14

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng does not discount the possibility of his corruption case hearing affecting his ability to contest in the next general election.

“Perhaps,” he said when asked about this during a press conference today.

The DAP secretary-general is currently the MP for Bagan and state assemblyperson for Air Putih.

He is expected to defend the two seats but the trial process would interfere with the campaign period if the election is held in March or April.

Yesterday, the Penang High Court set 23 days for trial, starting March 26, for the two graft charges involving Lim and businessperson Phang Li Koon.

Meanwhile, Lim said he was surprised with the prosecution's decision to amend the charge.

"Let the people judge, obviously I am the target, I know I am targeted, we have to face it when targeted," he added.

At the case mention of Lim's graft trial at the Penang High Court yesterday, DPP Masri Daud had said the amendment would "not be a major one".

High Court judge Hadhariah Syed Ismail fixed the dates for the hearing after the prosecution and Lim's defence team agreed to an early trial.

She fixed five days between March 26 and March 30, April 7 to April 12 (four days), April 23 to April 27 (five days), May 7 to May 10 (four days) and May 21 to May 25 (five days).

On June 30, 2016, Lim claimed trial to two counts of corruption charges related to the conversion of agriculture land to residential and the purchase of a two-storey bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn.- Mkini
