Minimum wage issue still up in the air

It remains unresolved despite Pakatan Harapan's promise to deal with it within 100 days.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) has failed to fulfil its promise to streamline the implementation of a minimum wage across the nation within 100 days of coming to power.
Today is the 100th day since it won the general election and the Dewan Rakyat was adjourned yesterday after sitting for 20 days without seeing the tabling of a motion on the minimum wage, which is supposed to be eventually raised to RM1,500 a month.
Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan recently told FMT the dominance of plantations in the Sabah and Sarawak economies made it unfeasible to equalise the minimum wage there with the rest of Malaysia.
Sabah Employers Association president Yap Cheen Boon said the proposal, as articulated by various PH leaders, was unfairly asymmetric.
Yap singled out the human resources ministry for criticism, saying it had not considered the impact of the proposed floor wage on the economies of Sabah and Sarawak and had not discussed the proposal with all stakeholders.
The ministry has also come under fire on social media for not giving enough attention to the issue. Some have said the minister, M Kulasegaran, was instead keeping himself busy with trivial issues such as the employment of foreigners in local restaurants.
Last June, Kulasegaran announced a decision to ban the employment of foreign cooks, but he backtracked after receiving a barrage of criticism.
Some captains of industry have said the ministry has yet to resolve important issues under its purview.
Malaysian Trades Union Congress president Abdul Halim Mansor agreed, saying the new government had not made any achievement in the area of human resources.
Regarding the minimum wage issue, Halim said: “The ministry has not approached us, who are stakeholders, to reach a mutual understanding.” -FMT
