PETALING JAYA – Two Johor leaders have clarified that an official letter supposedly in Chinese and English that had upset the Sultan of Johor, had actually been written in Malay.

The letter had been written by a Iskandar Puteri city (MBIP) councillor to ask residents to come for a discussion on road restructuring.

Perling assemblyman Cheo Yee How clarified that the version of the letter that went viral was just an attachment to the actual letter.

“The official invitation letter was written in Bahasa Malaysia, while the one in English and Mandarin was just the attachment to the official invite.

“I hope that this explanation clears the air and helps the palace understand that we are just doing our job to best communicate with the society,” he said.

Tan Hong Pin, the Johor state exco for Local Government, Science and Technology also explained that three languages were used in the letter, with the official letter written in Malay.

He said he supported the position of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language.

After discussions with the city councillor, Tan said, “I found that he had no intention of challenging the position of the national language.”

“The purpose of such an arrangement was to inform possible non-fluent Malay speakers to participate in the Road Restructuring Discussion between Jalan Jaya Mas ½ and Jalan Silat Print 2 in Skudai,” he said in a statement on Tuesday night (Sept 25).

Tan added there were irresponsible people who were trying to create an issue by just circulating the Chinese and English attachment of the letter while withholding the fact that the actual letter was in Malay.

“This irresponsible act must be stopped immediately so that racial harmony can be maintained in Johor,” said Tan.

Former Umno Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Iskandar Puteri PAS Youth had also slammed the Iskandar Puteri city council for the English and Chinese letter.

Earlier on Tuesday (Sept 25), Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had responded to complaints about the so-called “official letter” in English and Chinese by slamming the Iskandar Puteri city councillor.

“All official letters involving the state government or local councils that use the official letter head must be written Bahasa Malaysia.

“If the councillor does not know how to do his or her job, just resign. This is my warning … do not make this mistake again.

“We have never written any official letters in two languages,” His Majesty said in a statement via the Royal Press Office (RPO) at Istana Pasir Pelangi, Johor Bahru, on Tuesday (Sept 25). – ANN

Chinese letter by Harapan councillor earns wrath of Johor sultan

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has asked a Pakatan Harapan local councillor to resign if he does not know how to do his job.

This was after the councillor for Zon 8 Taman Bukit Indah, Chan Wei Kjhan, issued a letter in Chinese using the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) letterhead.

“If the councillor does not know how to do his or her job, just resign. This is my warning… do not make this mistake again,” the ruler said in a statement on his Facebook page today.

Sultan Ibrahim said any official letters involving state government or local authorities must use the national language.

The letter was an invitation for residents to attend a dialogue with Perling assemblyperson Cheo Yee How and MBIP representatives to discuss a road divider. The letter was signed by Chan.

Prior to the sultan issuing the statement, Cheo apologised for any offence caused.

“The letter was actually written in the national language, with the Chinese and English versions only included as attachments,” he said.

According to Sultan Ibrahim, however, official letters in the state have never been multilingual.

“We have never written any official letters in two languages,” he said.

Apart from the Bahasa Malaysia version of the letter, Chan had also written versions in both Chinese and English. Both carried the MBIP letterhead.

The issue of the letter was first raised by former Johor menteri besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Cheo had accused Khaled of misleading the public by only highlighting the Chinese and English attachments.
