SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has started his two-day official visit to Singapore.
His first stop was the President's Istana, where he was accorded an official welcome and inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Singapore Armed Forces.
He will pay a courtesy call on President Halimah Yacob before holding talks with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
The visit is part of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s high-level introductory visits to Asean countries, after being sworn in as the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The visit will provide the opportunity for both sides to exchange views on an array of bilateral, regional and international issues of concern; and to explore prospects for further strengthening cooperation for mutual interest.
Malaysia and Singapore have enjoyed 53 years of diplomatic ties and have maintained good relations as closest neighbours, as well as partners in Asean.
Both countries have strong cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade and investment.
Singapore is Malaysia’s second largest trading partner after China. Total bilateral trade between the two countries in 2017 was RM 220.88 billion (USD53.18 billion), representing 12.9% of Malaysia’s global trade.- Star
