French Scorpene lawyers in KL to meet AG

Two French lawyers engaged by NGO Suaram to file a legal suit in France involving Malaysia's purchase of two Scorpene submarines, are in Kuala Lumpur from Feb 10 to Feb 12, to engage with attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

The two are William Bourdon, who was previously blacklisted from entering the country by the BN administration, and his colleague Apoline Cagnat.
They were met by Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) director Cynthia Gabriel and Suaram executive director Seven Doraisamy upon arrival yesterday.
According to Gabriel, the lawyers are here to meet Thomas over the controversial Scorpene deal, in which top Malaysian officials were accused of receiving millions in kickbacks from shipyard builders DCNS and Thales.
They are expected to conduct a press conference after meeting Thomas in Putrajaya tomorrow.
"Things are moving very fast in the coming days, we hope to come up with a concrete plan on how to move forward in this matter; we have waited for seven years to nail the corrupt officials involved in this scandal," Gabriel told Malaysiakini.
"I have confidence that the authorities in our New Malaysia would do the right thing," she added.
The lawyers' meeting with Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, is, however, yet to be confirmed.
In May, Mohamad said he was willing to be briefed by the duo, who are established human rights lawyers in Paris.
A federal committee to study the various contracts inked with the Defence Ministry, including the deal to purchase the submarines, would be formed, Mohamed had told Malaysiakini, when met in Tasek Gelugor, Penang.
In July 2017, the French courts had indicted political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, who is a close associate of then-defence minister Najib Abdul Razak, who oversaw the purchase of the submarines from Thales and DCNS in 2002.
Suaram's civil suit had led to the indictment of several officers from the shipbuilder company for allegedly paying the kickbacks.  - Mkini
