Johor MB to meet Mahathir tomorrow, say sources

Amid escalating political tension due to Putrajaya's withdrawal from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to meet Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian tomorrow.

Malaysiakini was informed by sources that Mahathir had invited Osman to the meeting, which is expected to take place at his office in Perdana Putra.

"The menteri besar had said last week that he will be meeting Mahathir tomorrow," a source said.

This was also confirmed by another source close to Putrajaya. The source did not divulge any specifics of the meeting, however.

It is speculated that the Johor government may soon undergo a reshuffle, but it remains uncertain if the matter will be discussed at the meeting.

Although speculation abounds that Osman's position is under threat, several other sources well-versed with Johor politics said that they had no knowledge of the purported reshuffle, save for rumours circulating on social media.

"I haven't got any information about this (reshuffle). What I know (so far) is only through what people sent me on WhatsApp,” a source told Malaysiakini on the condition of anonymity.

However, a local politican who declined to be named said that certain leaders have been instructed not to discuss the possibility of Johor office bearers being replaced.

Another source said such rumours were being circulated heavily within Johor political circles, "even to the extent of locals asking around too." - Mkini
