Citizens’ Declaration hits 500,000 mark
PETALING JAYA: Five hundred thousand people have signed the Citizens’ Declaration, a document calling for Najib Razak to resign as Prime Minister, Sinar Harian reported.
Save Malaysia secretariat Kamarudin Jaafar, however, told the Bahasa Malaysia daily that he was confident the number of signatories would increase.
Kamarudin’s revelation today contradicts the claim by former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir – made on Facebook – that the declaration had obtained a million signatures.
Kamarudin also remained tightlipped when asked if the declaration would be handed over to the Council of Rulers despite not reaching the intended target of one million by the original deadline of May 11, which is today.
The Save Malaysia movement had previously stated it would hand over the document to the Rulers when they convened for the Council of Rulers conference which begins today.
Kamarudin told Sinar Harian that there were many more people who supported the movement but were apprehensive about signing the document or jotting down their MyKad numbers.
Apart from demanding Najib’s resignation, the Citizens’ Declaration – spearheaded by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad – is also pushing for institutional reforms.
The initiative was launched in March and saw the participation of politicians from Umno and opposition parties, as well as NGOs and civil societies.
