Kedah aims for high technology industries

KULIM: Economic transformation is the key interest of the Kedah Government as it strives to shift the economic landscape of the state from one that is based on agriculture to that of high technology industries.

Science, Innovation and Information Technology, Communication and Advanced Technology and Information Resources Committee chairman, Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor said this could be materialised by leveraging on the success of the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) that had attracted many investors with billion-ringgit.

She said the state government focused on six main projects that would be organised in collaboration with the federal government.

“The projects include ‘Rubber City’ in Padang Terap, Science and Technology Park in Kubang Pasu, Medical Science City and the International Airport in Kulim,” she told reporters after officiating the 11th Asian Science Park Association (ASPA) Leaders Meeting here today.

The three-day meeting ending on May 11 includes the participation of representatives from Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Iran.

Meanwhile, ASPA president, Professor Dr Hirohisa Uchida, who was present during the press conference explained on the two important factors that brought on ASPA’s decision in choosing Malaysia as its meeting location for this year.

“Firstly, the economic stability which can attract investors while promoting Malaysia globally,” he noted.

Kulim Technology Park Corporation president, Datuk Annuar Mohd Saffar said the participants were also introduced to the beauty of the Tree Top Walk at the recreation area of the Sungai Sedim Rapids, factories at the Kulim high technology industrial area as well as the scenic Bukit Bendera of Pulau Pinang. — Bernama
