No more multitasking maids for Malaysians
PETALING JAYA: Malaysians may have to pay more for specialised maid services as source countries, such as Indonesia, no longer want to send over traditional domestic maids, The Star Online reported today.
According to the report, Indonesia was more inclined to send upskilled helpers for specific jobs like caregiver, babysitter or nanny.
This follows news that Indonesia does not want to send live-in maids to Malaysia beginning from next year.
Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) president Jeffrey Foo said a mechanism was needed to ensure the helpers were properly trained and certified.
He said this arrangement would ensure employers would be satisfied with the service they paid for.
Foo added that another solution to the maid situation was for the government to license companies to supply part-time domestic maids to households who need them.
Malaysian Maid Employers Association president (Mama) president Engku Ahmad Fauzi Engku Muhsein concurred with the view that local agencies be allowed to supply part-time maids.
He added that the system of having domestic maids stay with their employers for two years was not always ideal, as it was a double-edged sword which could either see two years of harmony or two years of disharmony.
