Ringgit opens lower against US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar this morning, dampened by the stronger greenback.

At 9.02 am, the local unit was quoted at 4.0930/0980 against the US dollar from 4.0800/0860 at 5 pm yesterday.

A dealer said the anticipation of higher US interest rates next month sparked demand for the currency of the world’s largest economy.
The local note was also traded lower against a basket of major currencies.

It fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.9662/9719 from Tuesday’s close of 2.9572/9619, weakened against the yen to 3.7444/7500 from 3.7223/7291 and declined against the euro to 4.5878/5951 from 4.5729/5812 yesterday.

However, the ringgit appreciated vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.9291/9384 from 5.9311/9423 on Monday.
