Controversial Abu Backer’s Kuala Kangsar nomination rejected
KUALA KANGSAR, June 5 ― Datuk Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan’s nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Kuala Kangsar by-election were rejected today.
The controversial figure, who previously contested the 2014 Bukit Gelugor by-election as an independent but lost to the DAP, said he was not allowed to submit his nomination papers because his supporter and seconder were not present at the nomination centre, claiming the police had stopped them at the barricade outside.
“I felt very disappointed with the Election Commission as they did not not treat me respectfully,” Abu Backer said.
Witnesses claimed that Abu Backer tore his nomination papers in front of the by-election returning officer Mior Muhammad Jamil Mior Zakaria.
Police then asked him to leave the nomination centre at 10.04am for giving a press conference in the vicinity.
Abu Backer was charged in September 2014 with intentional insult under Section 504 of the Penal Code over racial remarks he allegedly made ahead of campaigning in the Bukit Gelugor by-election.
The lawyer entered the limelight when he threw himself in front of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s car in 2014.
The Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-election in Perak will see BN candidate Mastura Mohd Yazid face off against PAS’ Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad and Parti Amanah Negara’s (Amanah) Ahmad Termizi Ramli, as well as independent candidate, architect Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary in a four-way fight.
