PBB opposes Hadi’s Bill
KUCHING, June 5 ― The powerful Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) said today it would not support PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s Bill on expanding the range of punishments by the Shariah courts that it dubbed as hudud law.
PBB president and Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the implementation of Islamic criminal law would not be suitable in multiracial Sarawak, where Muslims comprise about 25 per cent of the population.
“We oppose the hudud law proposed by PAS,” Adenan told reporters after chairing the party's supreme council here today.
“Sarawak is not like Kelantan where the majority of the population are Muslims,” he added.
The Sarawakian PBB is the second-largest Barisan Nasional (BN) party in Parliament, with 14 seats, after Umno that has 86 MPs.
Umno and PAS have 86 and 14 seats respectively in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat, totalling 100, which would fall short of the majority needed to pass the Bill.
