Hudud or not, I won’t be in Parliament to vote on Hadi’s Bill, says Nancy
SABAK BERNAM, June 7 — Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri disclosed today that she will not participate in any parliamentary vote to support or deny PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang controversial Bill to strengthen the Shariah courts.
The Sarawakian MP from PBB said neither she nor her party supported hudud, but she would not vote either way even if Hadi’s Bill were not on the Islamic criminal law.
"Hudud or not, I'm not supporting it and if PAS wants to do that, it is none of my business.
"I will also not be in there if the Bill comes to Parliament," she told reporters after meeting Sungai Besar constituents while campaigning for the Barisan Nasional (BN) for the by-election.
Hadi’s Bill tabled in the Dewan Rakyat last month seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 to allow for harsher punishments on convicted Muslims apart from the death penalty.
Critics argue that the Bill is unconstitutional and will pave the way for the introduction of hudud, but PAS and Umno leaders have both repeatedly asserted that it will not and does not affect non-Muslims.
PBB president and Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem had said the implementation of Islamic criminal law would not be suitable in multiracial Sarawak, where Muslims comprise about 25 per cent of the population.
Earlier today, Nancy said she hoped the momentum of BN’s landslide victory in last month’s Sarawak state election will extend to the June 18 vote for both the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seats.
She added that BN will not resort to dirty politics during the campaigning period.
"Unlike other parties, we don't want to waste time bickering about others.
"Our campaign is simple, which is to explain to the people of our track record and voting for the ruling coalition will make any form of assistance to the people easier," she said.
Nancy played down the significance of federal ministers in Sungai Besar just two days into the official campaigning period that started Sunday.
"No election is easy as we need to work hard in every election," she said.
BN’s Budiman Mohd Zohdi is taking on PAS's Dr Abdul Rani Osman and Parti Amanah Negara's Azhar Shukur for the Selangor parliamentary seat.
