Malaysia book 2019 Asian Cup spot, spank Timor Leste 6-0
JOHOR BARU, June 7 — Malaysia qualified for the 2019 Asian Cup after beating Timor Leste on a 6-0 aggregate score after two legs.
Malaysia who scored a 3-0 victory in the first leg on June 2, scored an identical 3-0 victory in the second leg today at the Larkin Stadium, here to advance to the final round without conceding a goal in the playoff.
The match was evenly contested in the first 15 minutes but when Khair Jones struck the first goal in the 16th minute, Timor Leste seemed to have lost their momentum but held on to the 1-0 score until the break.
The second half started on a better footing for Malaysia who managed to drill in two goals after missing a number of golden opportunities in the first half.
Hazwan Bakri made it 2-0 in the 57th minute and substitute S. Chanthru put the icing on the cake in the 67th minute to ensure the 3-0 victory.
The win was the second for coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee in as many matches in the playoff. — Bernama
