Perak MB: Kuala Kangsar indie’s statement insulting to women

Zambry, who is also Perak Umno chairman, said, however, that he intends to pay no mind to the comment, which he said came from a person who appears to be making a profession out of contesting by-elections.

“Making a statement saying that women cannot be given responsibility, is insulting to the capabilities of women to be the people’s representatives for constituencies like that of Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat,” he was quoted saying by Malay language daily Berita Harian.

On Sunday during nominations, Izat said he threw his hat in the ring because he does not trust female leaders.

The 49-year-old said he wanted to provide Kuala Kangsar voters with an alternative to the two female candidates in the Perak parliamentary by-election — Barisan Nasional's Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid and PAS's Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad.

“I don't believe in women (leaders) because men lead women. If they (women) are not qualified to lead a family, how can they lead something larger?” he told reporters after submitting nomination papers here this morning.

“I have never agreed to women being leaders from the beginning. I feel men should be leaders and I don't believe in political parties because they are all ‘cari makan’ (looking to serve themselves). Parties only push people further apart,” he added.

Izat previously contested but lost in three elections as an independent, including twice in Pengkalan Kubor, Kelantan, in 2013 and 2014, as well as the Chempaka seat in the same state in 2015.

The federal Kuala Kangsar by-election in Perak will see a four-way fight with Izat BN’s Mastura Mohd Yazid, PAS' Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad and Amanah's Ahmad Termizi Ramli.

The parliamentary constituency is made up of 32,949 voters, comprising 22,496 Malays, 7,757 Chinese, 2,287 Indians, 330 Orang Asli, 16 Sarawak Bumiputera and 13 Sabah Bumiputera.

Polling has been set to take place on June 18.
