Putrajaya, AG reviewing child laws, minister says after Huckle episode

Nancy Shukri, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and the acting minister of plantation and commodities, said this when asked to comment on the case of British paedophile Richard Huckle.

"I'm not the law minister or the de facto but the relevant ministry is working closely with the AG to amend and enforce stricter laws.

"That shows there is progress from our side," she said.

Nancy also advised orphanages and others involved in working with children to be extra vigilant when hiring expatriates or even locals as teachers.

"I am shocked that this incident happened in Malaysia and I hope orphanage homes will take proper precautions after this when hiring people overseas or locally.

"The perpetrators may be nice as what Huckle was reportedly described as but children might not know how to express themselves," she said.

Huckle was yesterday sentenced to life in prison by a London court for abusing 23 Malaysian and Cambodian babies and children over almost a decade.

Reuters reported that Huckle, 30, was given 22 life sentences and would serve at least 23 years behind bars for his crimes against impoverished victims aged six months to 11 years.
