John Boyega set to join ‘Pacific Rim 2’
LOS ANGELES, June 7 — The Force clearly still is strong with John Boyega as he has now landed another juicy role in Legendary’s Pacific Rim sequel.
Boyega will take the lead role in the sequel which is set to start filming later this year. The first Pacific Rim, released in 2013, was directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Idris Elba.
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox,” Variety quoted del Toro as saying in a statement. “The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world.”
According to Deadline, Boyega will play the son of Elba’s Stacker Pentecost character. The plot for the sequel is still not known but it should most likely follow the events of the first film, which was set in a world where monster-fighting robot suits known as Jaegers were created to battle fearsome sea creatures.
Boyega tweeted his excitement at joining the project saying: “I’ll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise with Steven S.Deknight directing. Very excited!”
Boyega will also be co-producing the film through his own company, Upper Room Productions based on this other tweet he posted: “So happy! My company UpperRoom Productions founded by myself & @MrFemiOguns, will co-produce #PacificRim2 alongside @Legendary.”
