Kidnapping of girl in video took place in Indonesia, not here
PETALING JAYA: No kidnapping took place in Tesco Shah Alam yesterday, police have confirmed after a video of the incident went viral.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat told FMT that rumours of the kidnapping having occurred in Shah Alam were untrue and that no report claiming of it was ever lodged.
He, however, investigated the incident after receiving numerous calls from concerned members of the public as well as text messages over the legitimacy of the video, and found that the kidnapping was committed at a location in Indonesia.
“There is an Indonesian website confirming that the incident happened there. But yes, I can confirm it did not take place in Shah Alam,” said Shafien.
The 15-second video, allegedly taken at the parking lot of a hypermarket, showed a man approaching a woman whose little girl was walking a few paces behind her.
In a split-second, the man boldly grabs the girl and takes off running as her mother is rummaging through her handbag for her car keys.
The woman gives chase but two men suddenly appear and aggressively stop her in her tracks.
