‘Mystery’ disease patient gets assistance from Sosco

Dona-Marita-Amir-Nain,

KUALA LUMPUR: One year ago, a mysterious disease afflicted goods delivery worker Dona Marita Amir Nain, debilitating him.

The 32-year-old man had to leave his job as he was unable to move and could no longer support his family.

“In the beginning it was stiffness in my feet; the condition gradually deteriorated and now both my hands, from the wrist down to my toes can no longer function,” he told reporters when met at his residence in Batu Caves here.

Dona Marita said the hospital initially diagnosed his condition as “gout”, “but until now the hospital has not been able to identify it”.

According to the father of two, he had tried various alternative treatment to no avail.

He said his wife, Siti Salbiah Mustoki, 28, who worked as an assistant at a private dental clinic here, was forced to assume the role of household head.

But thanks to the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), he said his family’s burden had been greatly eased.

Perkeso managing director (Benefit Management Operation Division) Ismail Abi Hashim said RM5,000, in the form of a wheelchair and an adjustable bed, had been presented to Dona Marita, aside from the disposable adult diapers for life.

Perkeso has also offered to help Dona Marita undergo rehabilitation at its rehabilitation centre in Malacca.

“He is also getting a disability pension payment of RM975 and Constant Attendance Allowance of RM500 monthly, which hopefully could cover the expenses for his medical treatment and care,” said Ismail.
