Minister: Studies needed to gauge relevance of Bumiputera agenda
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani admitted today that the Bumiputera agenda may still be relevant in some industries, although he noted that most sectors are ready to be liberalised.
In a radio interview on BFM's The Breakfast Grille programme this morning, the newly-appointed second finance minister said studies still need to be conducted to ascertain the Bumiputera agenda’s relevance, including in the automotive industry.
“At this moment, it depends on which sector we are looking at, certain sector we can liberalise,” Johari said.
“But for certain sectors, we still need to look into it. For example the automobile industry, we still need to relook at it.
“I think detailed studies needs to be done to make sure whether it’s still relevant or not,” he added, when asked if the so-called social contract involving Bumiputera is still applicable.
