Pricier parking fees in KL from today

DBKL,-kadar-tempat-letak-kereta,-datuk-bandarPETALING JAYA: Be prepared to pay three times more than you usually have when you park your vehicles at certain business centres in Kuala Lumpur, starting today.

The Star reported that parking fees for lots owned by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) at several business hotspots in the capital have been increased by 150%, effective today.

What used to cost you 80 sen for the first hour of parking, will now set you back RM2, while the second and subsequent hours will cost you RM3.

The areas involved are Bukit Bintang, Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas, Desa Hartamas, Solaris Mont Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar, said the report, adding that the new parking charges would be enforced in stages from today till August 1.

Rates at DBKL-owned parking lots at business centres outside the city centre, including in Brickfields, Taman Maluri, Cheras, Wangsa Maju and Setapak are also expected to go up as well, according to the report.

KL Mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz told the daily the move was not aimed at generating profit but was the “only way” to reduce congestion in the city and encourage carpooling.

He pointed out that about 50,000 new cars were registered in KL every month and expressed hope that the parking rate increase would lead to at least one million single-occupant vehicle (SOV) drivers, switching to public transport or carpooling to work instead.

“If you remove one million cars from the city, you will get Hari Raya sort of car-free roads like what we enjoyed last week.

“That means everyone gets to go home to their families earlier, to spend quality time with their loved ones and have some time to do things they enjoy,” Amin was quoted as saying.

He also said that the maximum two-hour parking limit announced by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor earlier this month, would not be imposed just yet.
