Kit Siang: BN Supreme Council ‘toothless’ like Cabinet

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Supreme Council is an utterly toothless and irrelevant body, says DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

Adding that it was without any bite, role, authority or purpose whatsoever, the Gelang Patah MP and DAP Parliamentary Leader said in a statement that the council was now a superfluous creature.

“It’s no longer the ruling Federal coalition’s supreme policy making body. In that sense, it has become like the Cabinet,” Lim said.

He was commenting on BN Secretary-General Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s announcement on the BN Supreme Council meeting on Friday to discuss the Election Commission’s (EC) proposed redelineation exercise.

“Nobody believes the EC would dare to propose the latest redelineation proposals without the greenlight from Putrajaya,” Lim said, calling the proposals “the most unconstitutional, blatant and flagrant” constituency redelineation proposals since Merdeka in 1957.

He labelled the proposals as the most undemocratic of all five redelineation exercises in the country’s history.

The DAP veteran said that EC Chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah cannot deny the exercise was being carried out for the benefit of a certain party.

“His protestations and denials lack credibility and conviction,” Lim said in criticising Hashim for abandoning the Federal Constitution and the democratic principle of “one man, one vote, one value”.

“He has jettisoned his predecessor Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof’s pledge on redelineations.

“There should be no super-size parliamentary constituencies. Under the latest proposals, there are not only parliamentary constituencies reaching 100,000 voters but even beyond that preposterous figure,” Lim said.

He called on the EC Chairman to make public the redelineation proposals drafted by Aziz.

“The EC Chairman should also reveal how many sets of redelineation proposals had been considered before deciding on the latest,” said Lim .

Mocking the MCA and Gerakan for their public opposition to the redelineation proposals, Lim said, “Such objections do not really matter as they have long abandoned the important ‘consensus’ principle.”

“BN component parties outside Umno have long accepted a subsidiary and subordinate role in the ruling coalition,” he added.
