Tangerine (Citrus tangerina) is an orange-colored citrus fruit that is closely related to, or possibly a type of mandarin orange. The fruits differ in size, skin and taste, although both of them are packed with healthy nutrients.

Tangerines are rich in vitamin C which has powerful anti-inflammatory, antiviral and anticancer properties. The fruit is also rich in fiber (soluble and insoluble) that will reduce your high cholesterol levels and improve your digestion. Tangerines also contain a healthy dose of flavonoids and minerals such as iron, and are essential for your heart health while preventing obesity. Although they are easily available and relatively cheap, you should know that tangerines can be easily grown in your home as well. Here’s how:

Preparation and planting

Buy a medium-sized pot with holes at the bottom, then put some small stones inside and a bit of sand. Add some organic soil as well. Now, plant 2-3 tangerine seeds in it and cover them with half an inch of potting soil. Cover the pot with a plastic bag in the end to promote germination and keep it in an area full of sunshine.

Care

Use a fertilizer rich in zinc, iron and magnesium occasionally. Keep the mixture moist, and the seedling should develop within 3 weeks. When it does, remove the bag and put it under direct sunlight. As the tree grows, repot it in another container and water it regularly. If you notice any dead branches, cut them right away.

Light

Tangerines need 8-12 hours of sunlight a day, so make sure they’re near a window. If you’re using supplemental light use it to promote growth.

Temperature

55F at night and 70-80F during the day are the optimal temperatures for tangerines. If well-watered, they can withstand temperatures above and below the recommended ones.

Pests

Tangerines are attacked by spider mites, scale and mealy bugs. Check them for pests every day and act on time – we recommend using insecticidal soap. Rubbing some alcohol with a Q-tip should defeat mild infestations.
