REALLY, NAJIB? PM’S AIDE DENIES HIRING U.S. FIRM TO LOBBY TRUMP FOR FAVORS
KUALA LUMPUR ― The Najib administration did not engage a US firm to help lobby the administration of current United States president Donald Trump on its behalf, a government official said today.
“Contrary to recent media reports and a registration statement, neither the Prime Minister’s Office or Government of Malaysia has instructed, appointed or contracted in any form with the Godfrey Group Ltd, the 45 Group or Healy Baumgardner-Nardone,” Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuddin, press secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said in a statement.
Baumgardner-Nardone is the head of the 45 Group who reportedly worked on the Trump presidential election campaign last year.
A US-based news website The Daily Beast previously reported that the firm was paid RM1.07 million for lobbying purposes by a Malaysian company called Godfrey Group Ltd.
According to the report, the lobbying efforts were related to allegations that Malaysia has unfair trade practices, among others.
“We always welcome friends from around the world who rightly point out that Malaysia has a successful business-friendly economy open to trade and investment, and is a moderate Muslim-majority country which, under Prime Minister Najib Razak’s leadership, is a firm partner in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism,” Tengku Sariffuddin said.
