JPJ: AES helps us focus on other offences besides speeding

JPJ director-general says because AES cameras operate on a 24-hour basis, and the number of officers assigned to manually monitor for speeding vehicles can be reduced.
Nadzri-Siron_jpj_aes_600PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has welcomed the transport ministry’s move to add about 100 Automatic Enforcement System (AES) cameras along the nation’s roads, saying it would allow its officers to focus more on efforts to discipline errant drivers.
JPJ director-general Nadzri Siron said with the presence of the cameras the department can reduce the manpower assigned to monitor the roads for speeding vehicles.
“The AES serves to replace JPJ enforcement on the ground. Prior to this we relied on manual observation of traffic, but now we can use the AES which automatically transmits information (to JPJ),” he said.
“We can then take action on drivers who commit any offence,” he told FMT.
Deputy Transport Minister Ab Aziz Kaprawi said on June 28 that about 100 AES cameras would be installed at strategic locations nationwide next year.
He said the cameras to be placed along highways and federal roads would help to ensure road users complied with traffic rules at all times, as it would be a 24-hour enforcement system.
“The AES cameras will be added as we have a goal of reducing the accident rate by 50% by 2020, as per the international-level agreement,” he had said.
Nazri today said JPJ officers would still have to be on the field for other duties such as checking on licences and road tax payments.
He said they would need to go on their assigned rounds to check driving licences even of those who were not speeding, as well as the road tax stickers on vehicles.
“We will be able to shift our focus to other areas of concern.
“Perhaps in future there will be cameras that can detect vehicles over-taking along double-lined roads or which can spot people using mobile phones while driving,” he said. -FMT
