MUSLIMS IN 1MDB QUANDARY: HAJ SPONSORSHIP BY KLEPTOCRATIC FUND MAY NOT BE ‘HALAL’ – AMANAH TELLS JAMAL KHIR TO ORDER IMMEDIATE PROBE

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom has been urged to review the source of 1MDB funds used to sponsor 5,711 pilgrims on their haj since 2011.

Amanah deputy Youth chief Faiz Fadzil said this is in light of the seriousness of the revelations of alleged money laundering of 1MDB funds as revealed in the US Department of Justice (DOJ) forfeiture suits.

“As minister responsible for the management of the haj and religious affairs, Jamil Khir should call for an audit of the source of the sponsorship to ensure it is ‘halal’ and clean, as free from any form of abuse or corruption.

“This is so that the practice of haj as sponsored by 1MDB is not negatively affected,” said Faiz in a statement today.

He said 1MDB did not have strong enough finances, and relied on ‘riba’ (usury) as its model.

On Thursday, Bernama reported the Prime Minister-1Malaysia Development Bhd (PM-1MDB) Foundation special haj programme has benefited 5,711 people nationwide, involving an allocation of more than RM56 million since 2011.

The programme committee chairperson, Jailani Ngah, said the amount did not include subsidies provided by the government.

He said the total cost of haj this year was set at RM9,980 and a subsidy of RM9,570 was allocated to each pilgrim.

“This year, 1,100 recipients have been offered to join this programme and among the candidates are the imam, village development and security committee (JKKK) chairpersons, personnel from pondok religious foundation, tahfiz (religious) teachers … there are also media practitioners and tok batin (Orang Asli chiefs),” Bernama reported Jailani saying.

According to the report, four media practitioners also received the sponsorship.

They are Bernama stringer Tuan Azam Tuan Johan, 65, state communications unit deputy director (operations) Ruslan Abdul Rahman, Mohd Yassin Embong (New Straits Times, marketing) and Khalid Abdullah (RTM).
