Tremors felt in Selangor after Sumatra quake

A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale, struck northern Sumatra today, 248km southwest of Sabak Bernam in Selangor, said the meteorological department.

It said in a statement that the quake occurred at 9.24 am.

The department said tremors were felt in some areas in Selangor. However, there was no tsunami threat, it added.

Meanwhile, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolted Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern tip of Japan's Kyushu island at 11:56 local time (0256 GMT) today, the weather agency in Tokyo said.

China's Xinhua news agency reported that the temblor, which measured upper 5 on the Japanese seismic scale which peaks at 7, struck at a latitude of 31.4 degrees north and a longitude of 130.6 degrees east.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at a depth of 10 km.
