Fire breaks out at another tahfiz school
Blaze guts entire upper-floor dormitory of religious boarding school in Klang while pupils are in class downstairs.
PETALING JAYA: Yet another tahfiz school has been hit by fire just three days after authorities warned that almost half of these boarding schools in the country did not comply with safety requirements.
The first floor of the Nur Al-Quran Learning and Tahfiz Centre along Jalan Pengkalan Rantau Panjang in Klang was gutted by flames at 2.30pm today.
No one was injured in the incident unlike the fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 14 that killed 23 people. Several teenagers are alleged to have torched the school in KL for past grievances against the tahfiz students.
All the students in Klang however, managed to escape as they were in class on the ground floor of the building when the fire started, Berita Harian reported.
Four rooms in the boys’ dormitory that housed 25 pupils, aged between 10 and 19, were destroyed.
Student Ahmad Sudais Noor Azmi, 16, was quoted as saying that the pupils on the bottom floor were alerted by a girl who saw smoke emanating from the windows.
“We rushed up to the dormitory and saw the cupboards and mattresses burning,” he said.
He said they and nearby residents tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher and buckets of water.
The school had been operating at the premises for the last four years.
According to the Fire and Rescue Services Department, the fire was brought under control by 3.15pm.
On Oct 6, the department’s director-general Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said over 40% of the 1,657 tahfiz schools across Malaysia did not adhere to safety measures.
He said 144 notices had been issued to the managements of these schools to comply with building safety aspects, including electrical wiring and exits.
He said they were given six months to fully comply or face action.
On Sept 28, fire razed 60% of a female students’ hostel at the Maahad Tahfiz Yayasan Sofa school in Rembau.
The hostel was occupied by 37 students, all of whom escaped without injury in the 1.50am incident.
