Investigation papers on Namewee to be handed to DPP today

Investigation papers (IP) on rapper Namewee's video clip which allegedly touched on the sensitivities of the multi-racial society in the country will be sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office today, said inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
"The remand on Namawee expires today and it depends on the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) whether to extend the remand or not,” he told a media conference which was held after the monthly assembly at Bukit Aman, organised by the Commercial criminal Investigation Division in Kuala Lumpur today.
Police detained Namewee, 34, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, last Thursday for an investigation into the case.
He had uploaded a video clip for Chinese New Year titled 'Like A Dog' featuring a group of individuals wearing a dog mask allegedly performing vulgar dance moves, near the Putra Perdana Building which houses the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.
In another development, Fuzi said the police would work with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to address commercial crime cases which involved the use of digital currencies, such as Bitcoin.
However, the number of cases involving Bitcoin is still under control, with only five cases reported, he said.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation (JSJK) director, Amar Singh Ishar Singh said fraud on cryptocurrency involved received by the police involved intrusion into Bitcoin mining system and purchase of the currency.
“The number of cases reported is still low, but we will ensure our personnel and officers are ready,” he said.
Mohamad Fuzi said the Commercial Crime Investigation Department had also formed a task force to address cybercrime cases, including commercial crime.
He said a total of 28,271 commercial criminal cases were reported last year, with 6,417 cases already prosecuted.
Earlier, Fuzi presented commendation certificates to 14 JSJK officers for their excellent service.
