BN underestimated rakyat's dissatisfaction, says MIC chief in hindsight

BN has underestimated the magnitude of dissatisfaction against the ruling coalition, which had prompted its defeat in the May 9 polls, lamented MIC president Dr S Subramaniam.
In a press statement last night, he said the results, where BN won 79 parliamentary seats out of 222, were indeed unexpected and shocking to those in BN.
"Whilst we were aware that certain national issues had attained dissatisfaction amongst some of the Malaysian public, the extent of this dissatisfaction was something that we truly underestimated.
"The anti-BN wave in this election has completely dwarfed the political tsunami of 2008," he said.
Amidst this disappointment, he said, it is important for them to accept the results wholeheartedly and move on.
"It is now time for us to pick ourselves up and carry out our duty as a vocal and critical member of the opposition," he said.
"In their quest for Putrajaya, Pakatan Harapan has made plenty of promises to the Malaysian public. Time will tell if they are able to fulfil these promises.
"The Malaysian people have invested a lot of hope and faith in Harapan. I pray that the faith of the Malaysian people in the Harapan will indeed be honoured," he said.
He also expressed disappointment that he failed to defend his Segamat seat, which he said he had served the people for the past three terms to the best of his capabilities.
"Segamat has seen various massive infrastructure developments during my time as its MP," he said.
"It saddens me that I will not be able to carry out the economic development programmes that I had envisioned as part of the Segamat economic development action plan," he said.
‘Please continue blueprint’
The former health minister lost to PKR's R Santhara Kumar by 5,476.
Overall, MIC only won two parliamentary seats and one state seat out of the nine parliamentary and 13 state seats it contested.
The Indian-based party won the Tapah and Cameron Highlands parliamentary seats and Jeram Padang state seat in Negeri Sembilan.
Subramaniam urged Harapan to continue the implementation of the BN’s Malaysian Indian Blueprint (MIB) launched in 2017.

"It has very specific initiatives which were designed to transform the Indian community over the next ten years," he said.
"I have truly enjoyed my tenure as your health minister. I am proud to have initiated various transformation initiatives that have taken the Malaysian public health sector to greater heights,"
"Elections come and go, but this great nation of ours has to succeed. Let us unite and work together for a better Malaysia," he added. -Mkini
