ONE BY ONE, NAJIB’S MEN TURN ON HIM: ‘HE SHOULD HAVE FORESEEN BN’S COLLAPSE, DON’T TELL ME HE DOES NOT READ SOCIAL MEDIA’

PETALING JAYA – Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak should have seen the collapse of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) coming and that there were issues with his leadership, said Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
The Umno Supreme Council member went as far as attributing BN’s shocking defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14) to Najib’s failure to address allegations of corruption made against him and issues related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Jazlan said as a senior leader with over 40 years of political experience under his belt, Najib ought to have noticed that Umno’s approval rating was beginning to diminish since the issue of 1MDB surfaced beginning 2014.
While Najib has yet to be charged for any offences, he has been linked to corruption allegations associated with the state investment arm.
“Don’t tell me he does not read social media like Facebook and Twitter, about issues touching on him and his family? Impossible.
“In politics, he, as the leader of a party, should have known that all these negative perceptions against him and the family would eventually cause Umno and BN’s defeat.
“We lost because of these perceptions, because they are all tied to him,” he told theSun in a phone interview yesterday.
He was responding to Najib’s claim that BN leaders should have spoken up earlier if they thought there was a problem with his leadership, after Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin suggested that Umno had become so detached from reality and thought it was invincible.
Nur Jazlan said Najib must be answerable to all the allegations made against him and his family during his tenure as the prime minister, as this would restore the party’s credibility.
“Before the elections, Umno’s fate has always depended on him. Now that we have lost, he has to answer to all the allegations hurled at him to restore Umno and BN’s credibility, if he believes they are untrue,” he said.
Nur Jazlan said many of the party members chose to remain quiet and not speak up previously due to the respect they had towards Najib as the son of former prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
He added that prior to becoming Deputy Home Minister, he himself had voiced out his concerns towards the top leadership, but had to tone down after being appointed into the government administration. – Sundaily

Umno was getting weaker despite the no-contest tradition for top posts: Johari

PETALING JAYA: Umno did not become stronger when it held to its “no-contest” tradition on several of its important posts during party elections, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said.
Johari who is supporting the suggestion for the no-contest ‘rule’ to be removed in the party polls, said it was high time now for Umno to allow all of its members to choose their leaders democratically.
He added party members should not be worried that opening contest for the position of president and deputy president would lead to fraction within the party.
“Even before this, when these positions were uncontested, the party was still getting weaker. We cannot use it as a reason. We need to hold to the principle of democracy,” he said.
“Just look at the opponent parties. They do not have such a tradition of disallowing contest on important posts in their parties. They have no such thing,” he told theSun.
Johari said he was confident that Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein would still be able to win the president and deputy president party posts even if they were challenged in an open contest.
However, the duo’s victory would be even more meaningful if it was done through an open competition with other party members, Johari added.
Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the top posts in the party should only go uncontested if it was still in federal power, as the positions are traditionally tied to the posts of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
Nur Jazlan, who was a former deputy minister, said now that the party was no longer in the federal government, this rule should be null and void.
“The no contest rule only applies if Umno is in the federal government. So there is no need (for such rule) anymore.
“Because whoever the president and deputy president are, it will have no affect on the government’s administration. So I feel it is best that the posts be open to all who are interested,” he said when contacted.
Nur Jazlan added that, looking at the political scenario yesterday, he felt not many Umno leaders would want to hold the top positions in the party, and that the current top two — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein — should be allowed to helm the party together, if they go uncontested.
The issue of no-contest on important party posts was raised by Umno Bukit Katil chief Tan Sri Ali Rustam, who proposed for the position of party president, deputy president and one of its vice-president to go uncontested in the upcoming polls.
Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin however called for Umno to put a stop to the no-contest tradition, stating that the tradition was among reasons why the party lost in the 14th general election.
The position of Umno president was left vacant after Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who was also the former prime minister, decided to relinquish the post following the party’s worst performance in the national polls — which saw Barisan Nasional losing federal power for the first time since independence. – Sundaily

Najib says BN lost because of smear campaign against him

PEKAN: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today poured his heart out in public over the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14) and the investigations by the authorities against him.
Admitting to being aggrieved, disappointed and hurt, Najib claimed that BN’s loss was not due to the fact that the other coalition (Pakatan Harapan or PH) had a better agenda but because of the smear campaign against him in his capacity as the top leader.
Najib also said the facts had been spun – such as the claims that the Malaysian economy was doing badly, that the country was almost bankrupt, coupled with various sweet promises made by the opponent – were among the reasons behind BN’s defeat.
Najib, who is also Pekan MP and Pekan Umno Division chief, said this at the simultaneous opening of Pekan Umno division and branch delegate conferences, here today.
He said his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, had also faced accusations that she had intervened in decisions made by him.
According to Najib, he had never said “Hold on, I need to ask my wife first” because all the decisions involving the country’s administration or the party (BN or Umno) were decided at the Cabinet meetings or by the party’s Supreme Council.
Despite being saddened by the defeat, he said that as someone who practises the principles of democracy, he accepted the people’s decision and had handed over power in a good manner.
Najib also admitted that he decided to pour his heart out in Pekan, where he started his career in politics, as the people here knew him well since he had served the constituency for 42 years.
He added that for more than 60 years, the rule of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had succeeded in bringing Malaysia from its humble beginnings to becoming a successful nation.
He said the matter could not be denied because Malaysia now had achieved successes recognised at various levels in the world.
“In whatever situation in the past including us in Pekan, it was poverty but it has now changed into the face of a successful nation,” he added.
This was the first official function attended by the Pekan MP after BN lost GE14 on May 9, which enabled Pakatan Harapan to take over the administration of the country. — Bernama
