Berjaya boss may have to rethink proposed Tioman airport

Berjaya Corp Bhd founder and executive chairperson Vincent Tan may have to seek other means to build his proposed Pulau Tioman airport.
According to Malaysian Airport Holdings Bhd managing director Badlisham Ghazali, this is due to environmental concerns, since the proposal may involve extending the existing abandoned airport runway into the sea through land reclamation.
"We (MAHB) have seen it (the same plan) many times before. The government had also looked into it many times.
"The problem with Pulau Tioman is that there is no suitable area to land a larger plane, except if you extend into the sea," he said after his meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons at the Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur.
Tan was reported as saying last week that he would help the government out of the massive national debt problem by building an airport on the island for free.
According to Badlisham, past proposals to build an airport on the island were rejected after environmental impact assessment studies showed that the project would involve land reclamation.
"No approvals were granted because it will spoil the beauty (of the island).
"I welcome (Tan's offer) because maybe an entrepreneur can be more creative, especially when you need to land a bigger aircraft on Tioman," he said.
Badlisham noted that Tan's Berjaya Air had previously landed smaller planes on the island, but the tycoon could have plans to bring in larger aircraft, which would require a longer runway.
"And the only space you have, because of the hills, at least to my knowledge from what the government has shown me, is into the sea.
"So maybe now there are new ways or new techniques to do it, Alhamdulillah,” he added.
Plans to extend the airport runway at the popular diving destination a decade ago were scrapped by then-transport minister Ong Tee Keat due to environmental concerns.
The Pahang state government had welcomed Tan's latest offer, but said they would first have to listen to his full proposal before making a decision. -Mkini
