New AG must jump-start reforms agenda, says lawyers group

Lawyers for Liberty says the AG plays a key role in advising, drafting and initiating the proposals and legislations needed to carry out reforms in the country.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers group Lawyers for Liberty today called on Attorney-General (AG) Tommy Thomas to jump-start the reforms agenda put forth by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in its election manifesto.

The group’s adviser, N Surendran, said PH had made many pledges on wide-ranging institutional and legal reforms, including the repeal of laws such as the Sedition Act 1948 and the Universities and Universities Colleges Act 1971.

It had also promised to do away with the mandatory death penalty in all acts, to set up commissions to look into Barisan Nasional (BN)-era scandals, to form the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), to reform the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the AG’s office, to uphold human rights and to restore public trust in the judiciary.

“The AG plays a key role in advising, drafting and initiating proposals and legislation required to carry out the above reforms.

“As the government’s chief legal adviser, it is the task of the new AG to move forward the reform agenda, which was endorsed overwhelmingly by the people in the recent general election.

“There is now much hope and expectation placed upon the new AG Tommy Thomas, who as a well-known constitutional lawyer has had a long track record of speaking up for justice and truth,” Surendran said in a statement.

Calling on Thomas to make the implementation of such legal and institutional reforms his top priority, Surendran added that it would also be the best opportunity for the AG’s Chambers to redeem its reputation, which he said had been heavily damaged in the eyes of the public during the administration of the BN government. -FMT
