Tourism DG says MACC seized documents from ministry

Tourism Malaysia director-general Mirza Mohammad Taiyab revealed today that the MACC seized certain documents during its visit to the Tourism and Culture Ministry's office in Putrajaya last week.

Met after his meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons at Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur, Mirza said further questions should instead be directed to the MACC.

"This (information) is something you should get from MACC.

"They have got the documents and (are currently) studying them. That's all," said Mirza, who also declined to reveal further details on the proposals raised during his meeting with the council.

English-daily The Star reported last Friday that the MACC had visited the ministry to make "some inquiries" over a promotional deal signed with a private company.

The report quoted an MACC source as confirming that the visit was conducted last Wednesday.

The Star previously reported that former Tourism Malaysia chairman Wee Choo Keong had, on May 31, raised questions over an RM99 million deal between a local company and Tourism Malaysia, which he claimed was inked in just one day.

Wee, who reportedly labelled the agreement a "Speedy Gonzales" contract, also alleged that the deal was made against the ministry's procurement regulations.

The contract in question was reportedly signed with a local company that acted as a go-between for Tourism Malaysia and a China-based firm to promote Malaysia on social media platforms.

Wee, who claimed to have evidence of the deal, also said he would be lodging a report with the MACC.

Tourism Malaysia has denied any allegation of impropriety in the deal and its chairperson Siew Ka Wei was quoted as stating that the recent allegations made by Wee were "malicious and false". -Mkini
