PH’s PTPTN pledge will hurt new students, says Umno’s Khaled
Mohamed Khaled Nordin, a former higher education minister, says loan repayments serve to ensure sufficient funding for new borrowers.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Johor menteri besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin believes Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) promise allowing National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers who earn a monthly income of RM4,000 and below to defer repaying their loans will lead to problems.
In an interview with FMT, Khaled, a former higher education minister, said the repayment of PTPTN loans was needed to provide funding for new borrowers.
In April, the New Straits Times reported that 60% of PTPTN borrowers who were blacklisted had repaid RM1.84 billion in loans, and that this money could be used to support 76,000 new students until they completed their studies.
Khaled said the PTPTN loans were not only for tuition fees but also included living expenses.
“If students are staying close to their homes, they don’t have to worry about their food because the parents can provide for them,” said Khaled, who will be contesting the Umno vice-president’s post in the coming party elections.
Khaled said this wasn’t the case in other countries, where students would work part-time while studying to earn a living.
PH’s PTPTN promise is among the 10 manifesto pledges it is supposed to fulfil within its first 100 days in power.
However, Education Minister Maszlee Malik had said that his ministry was still studying a repayment mechanism, adding that an announcement on it would be made in the next two months.
Until then, Maszlee urged PTPTN borrowers to continue repaying their loans, amid reports that many borrowers had stopped doing so following PH’s victory in the May 9 polls.
Khaled said if PH went ahead with its PTPTN pledge, the victims would be prospective borrowers who might not be able to obtain loans.
He also hit out at PH’s other manifesto promises which he said were populist in nature, including the abolishment of the goods and services tax (GST).
“In the past, they said that the prices of goods went up because of GST. But after the tax was zero-rated, the prices remained the same. Maybe the price of clothes went down, but not food.
“They said the price of petrol increased because of Barisan Nasional, (but) they are also using a float system.” -FMT
