PETALING JAYA: PKR lawmaker Datuk Johari Abdul's call for the use of the Sedition Act against Datuk A. Kadir Jasin is in breach of the Pakatan Harapan manifesto and the Cabinet's moratorium on the law, says Lawyers for Liberty.
Its executive director Latheefa Koya said that the call by the Sungai Petani MP is utterly irresponsible, and in complete disregard of Pakatan's manifesto promise that the law will be repealed.
"It is shameful for a senior MP and head of the government back bencher's club to support the usage of this undemocratic law.
"Worse than that, Johari is using the BN-style tactic of calling for mass police reports in Kedah under the Sedition Act against Kadir Jasin," she said in a statement on Friday (Nov 2)..
Last month, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the Cabinet had agreed to a moratorium on the Sedition Act and that its repeal would take place at the next Parliament meeting.
Latheefa said that by calling for action under the Sedition Act, Johari Abdul is showing that he is no different from the Barisan Nasional leaders.
Johari had called for Kadir, who is a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia supreme council member, to be investigated over a blog post that allegedly insulted the Sultan of Kedah.- Star
