GEORGE TOWN: Pas Youth today slammed a planned party for Songkran, the Thai new year, hosted by a mall in Batu Kawan on the mainland tomorrow, as it would ‘court disaster’.

Batu Kawan Pas Youth information and sermon unit chief Nizar Ahmad Tajudin said the event at the Design Village Outlet Mall ran contrary to the moral values and culture of Malaysia.

He labeled the event a “pesta maksiat” (festival of debauchery) which would seriously offend the sensitivities of Muslims who were preparing to welcome the holy month of Ramadan.

“Batu Kawan Pas Youth admits that non-Muslims have their right to seek entertainment, but it has to be within the confines of what is allowed.

“Islam has never blocked entertainment, but our religion is strict on principles and would not allow the spread of social ills, especially in an area where Muslims are the majority.

“We regret that the DAP-led Penang government has approved this ‘pesta maksiat’. We hope that Muslims are not involved in such an event,” Nizar said in a press statement today.

A poster of the event at the Design Village Mall has gone viral.

Titled “Songkran Music Concert & Food Festival”, the picture features two scantily clad models as deejays for the event.

In Thailand, the Songkran celebration begins with visits to temples, with devotees offering food to Buddhist monks. Devotees pour water on Buddha statues and the young and elderly, representing purification and the washing away of one’s sins and bad luck.

Over the years, it has evolved into a water festival, in some areas, with parades and people splashing water on each other.
