PAS: Political cooperation with PKR stays for now
PENGKALAN CHEPA: PAS’ “tahaluf siyasi” (political cooperation) with PKR still stands for now, says the Islamist party’s elections director Mustafa Ali.
In his winding up address at PAS’ 62nd muktamar, Mustafa said the party has always practised political cooperation, having entered alliances with Semangat 46 and forming Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat.
He revealed that seat negotiations with PKR would continue come the 14th General Election.
Mustafa’s statement follows reports that the PAS Syura Council will decide on the political cooperation between PAS and PKR, after a motion urging for a review of political cooperation between both parties was passed without debate.
Earlier this week, PAS Muslimat had passed a motion at the wing’s muktamar, calling on the party to review political cooperation between PAS and PKR. Last year, PAS severed political ties with DAP over hudud.
PAS Youth had also called on PKR to choose who they wanted to stand with, be it PAS or DAP and Amanah.
“We welcome the views of PAS Youth and PAS Muslimat, because if they do not speak up, then we would not know the sentiments on the ground,” Mustafa said.
He stressed that election negotiations were inevitable as in past general elections, the Opposition managed to avoid multi-cornered fights.
Negotiating seats and agreeing on seat allocations, he said, is a process that would take place again.
However, Mustafa said that for the upcoming Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, a three-cornered fight could not be avoided as supporting Amanah, would be akin to backing the DAP.
In the June 18 by-elections, PAS will take on BN and Amanah in both the parliamentary seats.
