Bursa Malaysia ends higher on buying support in blue-chips

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Bursa Malaysia ended higher today on persistent buying support in blue-chips, coupled with healthy regional sentiment, dealers said.

At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) closed at 1,684.15 points, up 5.35 points from Thursday’s close of 1,678.80.

The key index moved between 1,679.95 and 1,685.56 throughout the day.

Gainers led losers by 487 to 314 while 397 counters were unchanged, 487 untraded and 22 others suspended.

Volume increased to 2.02 billion units worth RM1.90 billion from 1.85 billion units worth RM1.66 billion yesterday.

Panasonic Manufacturing and British American Tobacco were the top two gainers, rising 42 sen and 32 sen each to RM38.22 and RM51.32, respectively.

A dealer said Asian stocks were mostly up following the uptrend in Wall Street due to the healthy US retail data released on Thursday and a strengthening of global oil prices.

A host of central banks are meeting today and the outcome on interest rates is expected to support regional sentiment while talks of easing Brexit uncertainties continued to attract investors to riskier assets.

Of the heavyweights, TNB declined six sen to RM14.52, IHH Healthcare was flat at RM6.62, while Maybank added one sen to RM8.01 and Public Bank rose four sen to RM19.70.

Among actives, Talam Transform rose one sen to 5.5 sen, Iris Corp added 1.5 sen to 16 sen, SapuraKencana gained six sen to RM1.50 while MBSB was flat at 90 sen.

On the scoreboard, FBM Emas Index rose 38.91 points to 11,834.76, FBMT100 Index surged 38.09 points to 11,529.52 and the FBM 70 gained 50.50 points to 13,621.86.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index rose 43.63 points to 12,473.76 and the FBM Ace surged 59.99 points to 5,511.70.

Sector-wise, the Finance Index rose 28.77 points to 14,482.18, Industrial Index added 13.30 points to 3,189.07 and the Plantation Index advanced 27.83 points to 7,701.47.

Main Market turnover ended at 1.21 billion shares worth RM1.77 billion compared with 1.21 billion shares worth RM1.53 billion on Thursday.

The ACE Market volume fell to 276.67 million units valued at RM66.82 million from Thursday’s 286.84 million units valued at RM83.26 million.

Warrants rose to 530.61 million shares worth RM60.99 million from 350.24 million shares worth RM45.23 million on Thursday.

Consumer products accounted for 37.83 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (207.22 million), construction (53.99 million), trade and services (467.50 million), technology (68.61 million), infrastructure (9.04 million), SPAC (11.11 million), finance (134.03 million), hotels (238,200), properties (184.13 million), plantations (26.23 million), mining (nil), REITs (13.89 million) and closed/fund (18,200). — Bernama
