Put professionalism over profit, Zahid warns doctors after son-in-law’s death
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 12 — Deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that all medical practitioners need to prioritise professionalism over profit after his son-in-law passed away in June from receiving treatment at a private dental clinic.
Zahid added he hoped justice would prevail after the doctor responsible was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning.
“Those who have passed we accept it, but I am aware that my grandkids are now without a parent because of clinical negligence and I hope justice prevails.
“I hope it is a lesson to other practitioners that if you’re on locum and you want extra funds, the lives of patients must still be given priority. Professionalism must come first,” he said during a press conference after chairing the Cabinet Committee on Disasters meeting.
Earlier today, news portal Malaysiakini reported that 36-year-old Dr Ting Teck Ching claimed trial to a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code.
The obstetric and gynaecologist specialist was attached to the Imperial Dental Clinic in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar and is alleged to have caused the death of Zahid’s son-in-law Syed Alman Zain Syed Ali while on locum as a dentist.
If convicted, he will face a maximum jail term of 10 years.
Syed Alman Zain was married to Zahid’s eldest daughter, Datuk Nurulhidayah Zahid.
