Citing national security, army chief bans ‘Pokemon Go’ on camp grounds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Chief of Army Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor today warned army personnel against the playing runaway hit game Pokemon Go, especially on army camp grounds.
He said the augmented reality smartphone game is a threat to the safety of personnel themselves and national security when played by army officers.
“It is not impossible that these characters in Pokemon Go will appear anywhere, including areas in the camps.
“However we discourage our personnel from using the application on camp or anywhere they may be because it is a game that threatens security,” he was quoted saying by Malay language portal Sinar Online.
“If the characters show up on the roof, that affects the safety of the personnel involved. If the character is in a restricted area, it becomes a question of privacy and national security.
“If there are personnel holding a gadget to chase these characters in our camps, we may take action against them,” he added.
He said that among the concerns over the app was the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) as part of the game.
He added that the army had in the past made restrictions on the use of phone apps, and will look into restricting Pokemon Go as well.
“In the past, there have been issued restrictions on sharing locations or checkpoints through apps like WhatsApp and Waze. I hope the same restrictions can be made here,” he said.
“We are an organisation that determines national security is at its highest level. The army will have a thorough look into the application and determine the necessary steps to take,” he added.
The mobile game was launched in Malaysia last Saturday.
The Pokemon Go phenomenon is based on a 1990s game but updated with the latest technology that superimposes virtual creatures onto real world locations, and allows players to view and capture them through their smartphones.
