Khairy plays Bangladeshi worker in Alam Flora awareness video
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced yesterday he will appear in a video to raise awareness about solid waste segregation by utility company Alam Flora, playing the role of a Bangladeshi worker.
Khairy, who is also Umno Youth chief, posted on his Facebook page that his character was called Ahmad Khairy Jamal Udeen Chowdury, an Alam Flora worker from Chittagong, Bangladesh, who was “impressed” with the recycling policy in his “adopted” country, Malaysia.
“I play the role of Ahmad Khairy who is an Alam Flora worker to bring an important message to the youths. Respect those in Alam Flora and those who work in waste management.
“Only when we wear their shoes do we know the importance of their work,” he wrote.
The post was accompanied with a picture of Khairy in an Alam Flora uniform, sweeping the street next to a waste collection lorry that was promoting the waste segregation campaign.
Khairy’s move was praised by some of his Facebook followers.
“Congratulations YB for being a young leader who has the people’s interests at heart. May you be an example for the young,” wrote Uji Rahayu.
“Only Khairy wants and is brave enough to try other work or challenges that are not thought of by those who are in the same level as Khairy,” said Ismazihan Ismail.
Another Facebook user, Saifuddin Jumat, urged Khairy to show the youths that any work done through halal, or permissible means in Islam, is valid as compared to “loitering around.”
Khairy previously acted as a taxi driver in a short film project called 15 Malaysia in 2009, directed by Benji Lim.
He also directed a short film for Ikal Mayang, a project to tell the stories of women organised by a non-profit NGO called Women: girls.
Beginning June 1, Putrajaya began enforcing its waste segregation programme nationwide.
The enforcement comes under Act 672 of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007.
It makes it compulsory for residents to separate their solid wastes at source be it plastic, paper or others, failing which a fine between RM 50 to RM 500 will be imposed.
