Malaysian film to debut in South Korea

Award-winning Malaysian filmmaker Ho Yuhang’s latest film Mrs K is set to have its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea in October.

Mrs K stars Hong Kong actress Kara Hui as the titular character – a housewife whose ordinary life is shaken up when a former cop blackmails her with sordid information from her past. As a result, she is forced to confront former enemies.

The movie also features Hong Kong star Simon Yam, Malaysian actor Faizal Hussein and Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai.

Ho said in an interview in October last year that Mrs K will be “very dark and violent”. The film which reportedly cost RM6mil, is a joint production between Hong Kong and Malaysia, and was shot in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and Taiwan.

In 2003, Ho received the Special Jury Prize at the Festival of Three Continents in Nantes, France for his debut effort Min. His film Rain Dogs, released in 2006, received a nomination at the Venice International Film Festival.

In 2009, the 44-year-old director was awarded the Best Asian Film award for At The End Of Daybreak at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. The film also saw actress Hui clinching the Best Supporting Actress gong at the Taipei Golden Horse award.

The Busan International Film Festival will also feature a flick from another local auteur: Bradley Liew from Selangor will showcase his directorial debut Singing In Graveyards in the A Window On Asian Cinema programme at the festival.

The Busan International Film Festival will take place from Oct 6 to 15.
