‘IN ALL MY YEARS, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING’: HARDWORKING DR M STARTS TO WORK ON CIVIL SERVANTS, REVEALS THAT NAJIB WON’T KNOW WHO THEY VOTE FOR
DR MAHATHIR Mohamad, who led Barisan Nasional in five successful general election campaigns, brushed off talk that Putrajaya could trace and punish civil servants who vote against the government.
His words will carry some weight given that during his time in office Kelantan, Terengganu and Sabah fell into the hands of the opposition, and Kelantan has remained so since 1990.
His comments come in the wake of reports that BN officials have been warning civil servants that they have means of finding out if public servants vote for PH.
The Bersatu chairman assured civil servants that their votes were secret and that Putrajaya would not know how they voted, adding that this was good enough reason for them to vote Pakatan Harapan in the coming general election.
“Actually, the government doesn’t know who is voting for whom.
“Maybe many might be afraid that if they vote for the opposition, the government will take action against them,” he said
Mahathir said that during his 22 years as prime minister, he had never heard of such a thing.
“That’s why a lot of people were unhappy that I got the position and was prime minister for a long time.”
According to the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) there are 500,000 civil servants serving the country.
Dr Mahathir said that there were also concerns among uniformed bodies, such as the police and army, who will be voting by post.
“We understand that they are also afraid that if they vote opposition, action might be taken against them.
“There is a high possibility that the government will lose in the elections. If they do, then it can’t take any action against them.”
Dr Mahathir said to ensure that Barisan Nasional lost GE14 everyone must vote for PH.
“If we win the election and get a lot of votes, we also won’t know who supported us.
“There is no pressure on anyone to vote.”
He added that to ensure Malaysia continued be peaceful it was crucial that the people reject the BN government.
