Lockup was open during visit, Suhakam rebuts Nur Jazlan

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has hit back at comments made by Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed that its report on the poor conditions at Ayer Molek police lockup was “outdated”.
Nur Jazlan had said that the lockup, which is located in his parliamentary constituency of Pulai in Johor, closed down last July and prisoners had been moved to a new jail building.
While he agreed that the prison had been closed and moved, Suhakam chairperson Razali Ismail had evidence that the lockup remained open.
“In defence of the credibility of Suhakam, it must be pointed out that, the Ayer Molek Police Lockup is still operating in one part of the former prison building and Suhakam visited that lock-up on July 31 (and found it) in a deplorable condition,” he said in a brief, single-sentence statement.

In its report released yesterday, Suhakam had said that the poor conditions at the facility amounted to “cruel, inhuman or degrading” treatment and recommended that the facility be shut down if acceptable standards were not met.
From visits to the Ayer Molek police lockup, the commission had found it to be overcrowded with poor sanitation. Detainees were deprived of adequate food, water, and medical facilities.
These conditions violated the Lock-up Rules 1953 and had led to the spread of infectious diseases like tuberculosis among detainees, lockup officers and police officers stationed there, said Razali. - Mkini
