DPM Urges Authorities To Monitor, Arrest Spread Of False Hadith

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry's Publications Control and Quranic Text Division and the Islamic Development Department have been urged to not only monitor printed materials on Islam, but also other mediums to curb the spread of false hadith.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a lot of invalid hadith are being spread through various channels, including social media and video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, which needs to be stopped.

"It is easy to monitor printed materials such as books, because they require permits before they are published. The authorities can revoke them (if they contain invalid hadith and interpretations). But it is challenging for us to stop the preachers.

"We could caution him and have his credentials withdrawn, but then his teaching can be spread on YouTube and viewed by millions of followers,"

"For instance, there is a local guitarist from a rock band who became a preacher.

“What he preaches is based on sources of Islamic law, but (he is) interpreting them differently. He has many obsessed followers, and this leads to wrong practices.

"We could caution him and have his credentials withdrawn, but then his teaching can be spread on YouTube and viewed by millions of followers," Ahmad Zahid said at the Hadith Text Writing and Publication Guidelines book and hadith regulatory conference launch ceremony here today.

He said if false hadith is mixed with jokes, it can attract many followers.

"Thus, this can mar the image of Islam and disunite Muslims," Ahmad Zahid added.

The Hadith Text Writing and Publication Guidelines are aimed at regulating the writing of hadith in publications.-NST
