PKR politburo to determine Streram's fate in Rantau

The PKR political bureau will determine if the party proceeds with a suggestion to field Rembau PKR deputy chief Dr S Streram for the coming Rantau by-election or opt for a different candidate.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the PKR political bureau will soon convene a meeting to deliberate the matter.

"It's true that Streram was supposed to be the candidate, but he was victimised when he was disallowed (from entering the nomination centre), which led to him bringing the case to court.

"We will be discussing this together. He was not allowed to contest at the time (14th general election), but we will think about what we want and who we want to field," she told journalists at an event in Putrajaya today.

On Feb 18, the Federal Court upheld a decision to void acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan's victory in Rantau.

Mohamad won the Negeri Sembilan seat uncontested in GE14 after the returning officer prevented Streram from entering the nomination centre to file his papers, on the grounds that he was not carrying a pass.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the date of the Rantau by-election within 60 days of Feb 26, when it received confirmation in writing from the court.

Following the successful suit, there have been calls from some PKR grassroots members to field a different candidate in the Malay-majority constituency due to Streram not being a Rantau native.

However, Wan Azizah declined to weigh in on the protests against Streram's candidacy.

The by-election will be an important test for Pakatan Harapan after suffering consecutive defeats in the Cameron Highlands and Semenyih by-elections.

Mohamad is expected to defend the constituency, which is his birthplace and stronghold. - Mkini
