6 reports lodged on S’wak nomination process
KUCHING: Sarawak police have received six reports involving offences throughout the nomination process for the 11th Sarawak state election yesterday.
State deputy director of strategic planning, crime prevention and community policing ACP Mohd Haris Daud said five investigation papers had been opened although six reports were lodged.
“One of the cases involved a 53-year-old who was assaulted by supporters of a party at Dewan Suarah Kapit during nomination.
“One report claimed a candidate’s banner and campaign materials were displayed even before the Election Commission announced the candidate’s name,” he told reporters at the Sarawak police headquarters here today.
Harris said 29 political ceramah permits were approved, comprising 22 BN candidates and seven DAP candidates, while another eight applications had been received today.
He said police had already identified 20 hotspots, including Batu Kawah, Stakan and Senadin, where sensitive issues could be raised during the campaigning period as stiff competition is expected at the 20 hotspots.
“Certain areas have been identified as hotspots based on experience and incidents that occurred during the previous election.
“Some fans are fanatic in nature while some were involved in ‘poster wars’ as well acts of sabotage.”
Harris said police would increase monitoring and patrolling activities in the hotspots throughout the campaign period.
“We have increased our resources in these areas to be prepared for any eventualities,” he said.
