Amnesty for motorists to pay parking fees
KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) is holding an amnesty programme to allow motorists to clear unpaid parking fees without having to pay any compound and late payment interests.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah, who is in charge of DBKK, said motorists who paid their arrears during the period would only be required to pay basic parking charges.
“DBKK’s Compound and Recovery Unit has issued notices to over 20,000 motorists over the last six months, involving unpaid fees amounting to about RM700,000, not including late payment charges,” he said after launching the programme at the DBKK headquarters yesterday.
Yong said no penalties, additional charges, legal costs or administration costs would be charged for all unpaid parking fees during the amnesty period until June 10.
“DBKK also encourages those who have yet to be issued with notice to come forward and clear all their unpaid parking fees, to avoid being given compound and late payment charges with interests,” he said.
Yong added the amnesty programme was part of DBKK’s effort to collect unpaid parking tickets amounting to RM6.6 million from over 100,000 motorists.
He said nine payment counters had been opened at DBKK premises across the city for the programme.
Motorists can choose to make their payments at the DBKK headquarters or its other premises and counters, namely DBKK office at level seven of Centre Point, DBKK Holding office, DBKK counter at the sixth floor of UTC, DBKK counter at Damai Multipurpose Hall, and DBKK kiosks at Inanam New Township, Damai Plaza IV and Lido Lintas Plaza.
Yong also said that over 300 outlets, including petrol stations, Orange, mobile phone shops, mini markets and selected eateries are now helping DBKK to sell parking coupons.
“Motorists only need to look for the signage ‘Parking Coupon is Sold Here’,” he said.
Meanwhile, DBKK director-general Joannes Solidau disclosed that Kota Kinabalu City has over 30,000 parking lots, including those provided by shopping mall operators in their buildings.
However, he said many motorists still park their vehicles indiscriminately, blocking the traffic and causing congestion.
“It is not right to say there is not enough parking space but DBKK will nevertheless work on providing more parking areas in the City,” he said.
DBKK Holding Sdn Bhd executive director Kenny Chan said RM1 million worth of parking coupons were sold monthly since the introduction of the coupon system last year.
Chan said motorists issued with summonses for parking for a period more than the value of the coupon they had scratched and left on their vehicles could go to any DBKK kiosks immediately or within 10 days to have their summons cancelled by scratching additional coupons matching the period they had parked.
